Castelo de Vide is a town in the Alentejo, situated on a hill, with a castle, a walled enclosure, a medieval city and a Jewish quarter, and a 17th centurey coat of arms square (designed by Nicolau de Langres).
Inside the fortress, in the Terreiro da Senhora da Alegria, is the Convent de Nossa Senhora da Alegria (or Santa Catarina), next to the Church de Nossa Senhora da Alegria, which is still unfinished. The Church, in Baroque style, was rebuilt at the beginning of the 17th century.
Also inside the fortress, in the easternmost part of the city, is Rua dos Quartéis, where the old barracks of the medieval city remain, two stone buildings with rectangular plans. The typological formula used in these barracks illustrates the rationality of the construction process.
